Specialized Care For Our Aging Patients

146780718Most of us remember being told that 1 year of a dog’s life is equal to 7 years of a human.  While this averages out, we must also take into account the size of the animal.  An eight year old Great Dane is a senior citizen while an eight year old Miniature Poodle is only middle aged.

As our pets age there are a number of diseases and conditions that can impact them and shorten their lives and decrease their quality of life.  As is true in human medicine, early detection allows for early intervention thus helping to prevent serious harm and/or slow the progression of the disease.

While most clients understand that an annual physical exam is important throughout our pet’s lives, it is also important to begin screening our pets as they reach “middle age” with an “internal exam” consisting of lab work and other diagnostics tests.  We can diagnose conditions such as diabetes, heart and liver disease, arthritis, hypothyroidism, as well as different types of cancer.

We encourage all owners of middle aged and senior pets to get them on a regular plan of preventive health care to keep them happy and healthy for as many years as possible.
